Humpback Whale Watching and Restaurants in Ricon de Guayabitos
My vacations have been to Nayarit, Mexico for the last seven years, chiefly due to the great surfing. I am no professional but I love to ride the waves and the coastline along Banderas Bay is phenomenal. A group of us go to Mexico twice a year for the unbeatable surfing and, well, just because it is so laid back. During some trips, I saw groups doing some humpback whale watching in Sayulita, and while the people on the tours always appeared happy on when they returned, I do not get into wildlife much, nor do my buddies. We always liked to surf, have a couple empanadas at some beachside taco stand, take a nap, surf again, and then have a couple margaritas to close down the evening.

On my most recent vacation to Sayulita I went by myself. My usual companions could not make it and it was kind of a spur of the moment trip for me regardless. It was just one of those gotta-get-away times and I usually answer those with a cheap trip to Mexico. I had performed my customary ritual of surfing, sleeping and drinking for two days and frankly, I was becoming a little lonely at night without my friends. On the third night I was in Mexico, I got myself slightly drunk and started to chat with a group of travelers who were planning a morning trip into Sayulita for a humpback whale watching adventure. It could have been the margaritas, but I was unexpectedly rather interested in getting close to these majestic mammals. My new buddies made it sound like a fantastic encounter, and I was beginning to realize that through my love of surfing and the ocean, I had developed an empathy for the animals in it.

Well, the next morning my head was pounding and I was sick but my new buddies insisted on dragging me into Sayulita for the humpback whale watching trip. I really cannot stand big groups – one of the best arguments for staying away from the tours is that the boats are often packed with people. Mercifully, this was a private voyage and there were only a handful of us. Nothing happened for about a half hour and then just like fifty yards away a huge humpback whale exploded from the water, towered over the surface, blasted a shot of water to take a breath and crashed back into the sea. I saw schooling fish
and even a group of seals. It was the most unique experience in my short life and now every voyage I have to Mexico always includes a whale watching tour.
