Question by fan1906: Any safety tips for a couple traveling to DC in late December?
My boyfriend and I would like to travel to Washington DC in late December. However now that I’ve searched a bit over the internet there seems to be a lot of reports of crimes in the area and I was wondering if I should reconsider my destination of choice. We would probably be staying at the Renaissance Downtown hotel and would mostly visit the National Mall and museums. Do you have any safety tips or suggestions for us?

DC is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. There are plenty of white people here; don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

Question by riversrightfoot: What to expect when traveling to North Carolina in late December/January?
So I’m from Texas and we don’t really get much action as far as snow goes – we have some ice/sleet to deal with but rarely does the snow actually stick to the ground. I was wondering what to expect if I take a road trip to North Carolina leaving in late December and returning early January. We’d be traveling through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and SC. It’d be great to know if I’d probably encounter inclement weather on my way there or back. Would I need snow chains on my tires? Thanks.

You may encounter some inclement weather, but you definitely do not need snow chains on your tires. If you do encounter any really bad weather, as someone who is not accustomed to driving in it, you should pull over and wait it out.
There is a trip planning feature on weather.com that can probably give you pretty sound advice. Some roadmapping sites might also have weather alerts built in.
I am from Virginia, and I drove an Elantra with a u-haul behind it from Virginia to Texas a few years ago.

Question by David B: Better to book a cruise early or late?
I’m planning a cruise in December 08. Is it better (price/room) to book it soon or wait til November to get a “last minute” deal?
Also, if I book now, is it better to choose my room or go with a “guaranteed” category?
