When to book is always a bet, you never know for sure what the prices of plane tickets are going to do. But in the long run, early bought tickets are almost always cheaper than tickets bought a short time before traveling.

Travel between Frankfurt and Amsterdam is easy. I would go for flying into one and out of the other, to avoid doubling up. Most likely the cost will be about the same as the price difference in plane tickets, (or the train being more expensive.)
Here is a link to a site that can give you all info about the train journey you need:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&
With the fast train it takes about 4 hours and is a little over €100 when bought on the day of traveling, but if you are willing to prebook (up to 2 months in advance,) tickets are available from €39.

Staying in hostels, you can count on spending about $ US100 per person per day. But it is very easy to spend more.
You can find hostels by googling on the name of the town and the word hostel, or search the older answers here, as there are a lot of questions about hostels in Amsterdam.)

A good site with a lot of information about Amsterdam is:
http://www.amsterdam.info/

Added:
I do not know how often the other answerer has been in Amsterdam, but I bet it is not often.
Most people in the Netherland have learned English as second language, German and French are coming as 3rd and 4th languages but by not even half as many people, only in the border area with Germany and in the coastal villages where a lot of Germans hold holidays you will find Dutch people who do speak German but no English, and not many of those. The people who have learned German in school but no English are rarer still.
In Amsterdam you are as likely to find people who speak English but no Dutch, working in restaurants or shops.

Central Amsterdam is indeed near the station, but not just a few blocks. If you look at a map of Amsterdam, like this one:
http://www.amsterdam.info/map/ (Zoom out once or twice,) you will see a half circle of canals. All within and just outside this ring is central Amsterdam and either within walking distance from the Central station, or within a few minutes on the tram or bus. Public transport is good and plentiful in Amsterdam, and not expensive. Taxis are expensive and not needed unless you travel with too much luggage, and even then you can go by bus or tram.

A good site to search for plane tickets is http://www.skyscanner.net/

Question by Saimon: cheapest flight to oulu, finland from san francisco or the bay area?
I will be travelling at the end of december and returning around the end of may 2009 for an exchange program to finland. Where can I get the cheapest flight? I already went through kayak and travelocity and it costs around 1250. Is there any other place where I could find some cheaper deals.

Answer by tonalc2
That’s actually a very good price for flying (a) during the holidays and (b) returning in high season. I doubt that you will find anything cheaper.

You might consider using Orbitz, which now has “price assurance;” if someone gets a lower price on the flight, they will refund that difference to you.

Question by sandra: How far ahead is too far ahead when booking a flight from the US to UK?
I am planning to visit a friend in London around the end of December 2008 beginning of January 2009. The problem is I am not 100% sure I will still want to visit in 6 months. How far ahead should I book my flight and still get a good deal? Can I book it 3 months ahead and still pay the same as booking 6 months ahead?

Answer by silentnonrev
simple answer is: no-one knows what conditions will be like next month, let alone in 6 months. Will oil go to $ 200/barrel? $ 250? If you are not sure you want to go, I would say hold off, because almost all tickets are non-refundable except the most expensive ones.

Assuming “normal” economic conditions…..you should still be OK three months out. Just make sure to buy your ticket with a credit card, in case the airline you choose goes belly up!

Buon viaje
