Question by Josh W: Cheap travel from Madrid to other European destinations?
Hi, I’m studying abroad in Madrid next Spring (January-May 2011) and I wanted to plan a few trips while I’m there during breaks and long weekends. I’ll already be able to do a decent amount of traveling in Spain thanks to the program, but I was wondering what other places would be ideal and cheap to travel to (aside from Portugal, which is already a definite) while I’ll be in that part of Europe, and if there are any deals/discount/money saving tips that anyone could offer. Also, if anyone knows anything about cheap travel to northern Africa from Spain, that would also be interesting to hear about as well.
Anyone who has any advice or thoughts to offer, just keep in mind that, unless I’m able to go during a 10-day holiday from school, I’ll only have about 3 days in whatever place I go to.

you can take the ferry from Spain to Morocco

I want to take a little weekend trip with my fiance between semesters in december, so maybe dec 19-21. I really don’t care where we go, and I have heard of people getting awesome deals on flights if they’re really flexible about destination. I have also heard of people just going to the airport and seeing what they are trying to sell that day. I want to find tickets for under $ 150. Any tips?

Leaving out of Chicago Ohare airport for the 21st for at least 7 nights more if I get a great deal. I have until the 2nd of January. Look for cruises. Ask about including air fare both ways. It will be cheaper and you will all enjoy the all-inclusive cruise.Look for a cruise out of Miami, or Port Canaveral. Go to vacationstogo.com and cruisedeals.com and search for the best fares for two inside cabins.

Where can I find a cheap 7 day cruise to Hawaii, that is scheduled for December 07 or January 08, for 3 people. I know I heard on the news the other day that January-March is “wave season” where the cruise lines give out great deals but how do I find them? I’ve tried, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruise Lines, Norwiegan (sp?) Cruise line, and Carnival and I haven’t found a 7 day cruise yet. Anyone know of a travel agency online that could help or where to go for a great deal?

I’m trying to book a cheap Caribbean vacation for two (Bahamas, Virgin Islands, St. Martin, DR, or Cancun, or similar) for the week before Christmas. When I get on the websites, they advertise a price, but as soon as I enter my details (travel dates, etc.) the price quadruples. What am I doing wrong? I am willing to fly back on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day — I thought this would make it cheaper but perhaps I am wrong? What dates would make it come up as the advertised price? I can be flexible (leaving anywhere between December 16th and 20th, coming back anywhere between 20th and 25th). Which dates/destinations would give me the best deals? Also, any recommendations as to specific destinations? Or places to book other than the websites that I have had the above mentioned problems with? I just want it to be simple! Thanks 🙂
Well, when do you have to return by for it to be considered ‘before Christmas.’ ? I have tried the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, but prices are equally high on all 3 days

The prices always go up a lot during Christmas. Try getting airfare using American Air using flexible date search, then book your hotel separately. I got really cheap airfare through them to Jamaica for this New Years holiday. LAX to MoBay for $ 409, but I got the tickets about a month ago.
High season starts in December and continues for a few months. The most economical time to travel to the Carribean is during the months of June through August.

Things are certainly changing with the current economy issues, but historically there have been very few bargains in cruises over the Christmas holidays, and no deep discounts. And the ships seem to be sold out very quickly, too. You can find pretty good deals in cruises just before and just after Christmas, but generally not during Christmas itself. However, things are indeed changing, so why not meet with a travel agent?
