The Margaret River region of Western Australia features a wide-range of sight-seeing opportunities including premium food, world-renowned wineries, exclusive shopping prospects, and more recreational activities than any person could even wish to complete in a solitary visit. The area is also one of Australia’s top surfing locations with 110 km of combined shoreline including Cowaramup Bay, Cape Leeuwin, and the Shire of Nannup. With such a substantial stretch of ocean-front land, it’s no shock that a popular holiday option is whale watching in Margaret River.

The ideal time to go whale watching Margaret River:

Humpback and Southern Right whales can be seen making their once-a-year migration from the freezing waters of Antarctica to their warmer, summer homes in the north. Between June and September, Flinders Bay, Augusta is the most perfect location to go whale watching. While later in the year between September and December the Geographe Bay in Busselton is a better choice. Endangered Blue Whales can also occasionally be noticed from Geographe Bay. Many appear to have the greatest luck midday while the sun is higher overhead.

Specific places to go whale watching in Margaret River:

As a result of the sheer acceptance of whale watching in the area, various locations to do so are at hand. Spectators have two principal alternatives: to see by boat or by land look-out.

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse: This traditional look-out also offers binoculars to ensure an excellent view.

Geographe Bay: Geographe Bay is, as described, one of the greatest locations to view all three varieties of whale between September and December. There are a wide range of charters available as well.

Naturaliste Charters: With a 99 percent success rate as far as whale sightings and a free-retry guarantee if viewers don’t find a whale, Naturaliste Charters is a certain bet. They also own the largest charter vessel in the south west, the Cetacean Explorer, which is an immense 55 feet long. Tours are between two and three hours weather permitting and explore Augusta between mid-May and August, and Dunsborough between September and mid-December. Sunset whale watching tour dates can be asked for.

Legend Charters: Legend charters features the same deal as Naturaliste charters in relation to free second probabilities if a whale isn’t seen. Their sighting success rate is also 99 percent. They offer two to three hour tours between May and December aboard Santosha, a 52-foot charter boat.

All Sea Charters: The Manta Magic, All Sea Charters’ vessel, offers a unique viewing encounter having a hydrophone that permits the whales to not only be noticed, but also listened to. Tours are granted to small-scale groups of 18 at a time so that everybody is ensured the excellent 360-degree perspective from the ship’s main deck. Excursions are provided between June and December, twice daily at 10:45 AM and 1:30 PM leaving Augusta for Flinders or Geographe Bay. Tours can be taken on demand for groups of six or more.

Just from the short sampling of possibilities above, it’s obvious there is no scarcity of opportunities to go whale watching Margaret River. Many options even occur with a 99 percent rate of success and a likely second chance for that unlucky one percent.
